Block

List

A run of short items, each marked with a bullet or a number — typed in yourself, or built one item per record from your data.

What it is for

A List is a single block holding several items, drawn one under another with a bullet or a number in front of each. Items can be indented into sub-items, and every level gets its own kind of marker. A List can also be built from your data, so it shows one item per record (every product in an order, every attendee) instead of fixed text.

Choose something else when the items need richer content. A List styles all its items together, so if one item needs a bold word, a link or a different colour, use a Text block, which can hold bulleted and numbered lists with formatting on single words (Change type → Text converts a List; point at → Text first to see the result). If every record has several values side by side, use a Table. If each record needs a small layout of its own, use a Repeater.

Add and edit it

Choose List from the Data group of the block palette, or search for "bullets". A new List starts with two bulleted items, "First item" and "Second item".

  • On the page. Double-click an item to edit its text in place. Press Enter to break it into a new item at the caret.
  • In the side panel. For a List you typed yourself, the side panel repeats the items as a list you can add to, reorder and delete.
  • Nested lists. A flat list shows an Add nesting… button; a list whose items carry indent levels (typed here or migrated from a document) shows Edit items…. Both open the Edit list items window, where each item has move up and down, outdent and indent, add-below and delete buttons, and Marker format per level lets you choose what each level looks like. Changes apply when you apply the window, and count as one undo step.

Settings

  • Items (typed in). The items in order. Hidden when a data list is chosen, because they would be ignored.
  • Data path. Pick a list from your data to build one item per record. Chosen, the typed items are ignored. The panel shows each list's size, its fields and its first record, and Create a list makes one without leaving the panel. Not connected — items are typed in takes you back to typed items.
  • Show on each line / Pattern for each record. For a data list: the words and fields printed on every line. Write it once, for example {{ $data.item.name }} - {{ $data.item.qty }} pcs; both {{ $data.item.name }} and {{ $data.name }} reach the same record field. Bare forms like {{ item.name }} do not work. Until you choose a field, every line prints [object Object], and the panel says so.
  • Numbered. Numbers the items (1., 2., 3.) instead of drawing bullets. Default off.
  • Gap (millimetres; default 1). Extra vertical space between one item and the next. 0 packs them together.
  • Font size (points; default 11), Font, Weight (normal or bold) and Color (default black). These apply to the whole list, bullets and numbers included.
  • Bullet/number colour. Colours just the bullets or numbers. Empty means they follow the text colour.
  • Left indent, Special and By (millimetres). Left indent moves every item's body in from the left margin. Special then shapes the first line: Hanging is the classic list shape, where the marker sits out to the left and wrapped lines line up under the text; First line pushes the first line in further. By is how far, and does nothing while Special is "(none)". With Hanging, Left indent is where the wrapped text starts and By is how far the marker sits left of it.

Marker styles. Numbered levels step 1. → a. → i. as they indent, and bullet levels • → ◦ → ▪. In Marker format per level you can pick any of: 1, 2, 3…; a, b, c…; A, B, C…; i, ii, iii…; I, II, III…; • Disc; ◦ Circle; ▪ Square for each level.

Nested limits. An item can be indented only one level deeper than the item above it, and the first item cannot be indented. Each level also moves in by 6 mm on top of Left indent. Nested lists are typed content: if a list has both indent levels and a data list, the typed indented items are what prints.

Variations and combinations

Nested checklist. A bulleted two-level list typed into the List, with sub-items for each point. The fixture is list-1.json. The items are: Keys (Front door, Mailbox), Meters (Electricity reading, Water reading), Sign the handover protocol. Level 1 uses • and level 2 uses ◦. The page shows three bullets with two indented circles under each of the first two.

One bullet per product. The Data path is $data.products and the pattern is {{ $data.item.name }} - {{ $data.item.qty }} pcs, EUR {{ $data.item.price }}. The fixture is list-2.json. With the sample data (Desk lamp 2 at 39.00, Office chair 1 at 189.00, Monitor stand 3 at 24.50), the page shows "• Desk lamp - 2 pcs, EUR 39.00", "• Office chair - 1 pcs, EUR 189.00" and "• Monitor stand - 3 pcs, EUR 24.50". Add a product to the data and a bullet appears.

Numbered steps with a hanging indent. Numbered on, Left indent 8, Special Hanging, By 8. The fixture is list-3.json. Each of three long steps starts with "1.", "2.", "3." at the margin, and the second and third lines of each step line up under the first letter of the text, not under the number.

Output differences

  • PDF and web page (HTML). Markers, levels, gaps and indents are drawn as set. A long list breaks between items across a page boundary, never in the middle of one, and a numbered list keeps counting on the next page instead of restarting at 1.
  • Word (.docx). The markers are written into the paragraph text as plain characters, not as Word's own list numbering. The file looks the same, but Word will not renumber the list when you add an item, and cannot promote or demote its levels. The download says so with a warning. If people will keep editing in Word, consider whether a Text block is the better choice.

Troubleshooting

  • Every line says [object Object]. You chose a list of records but no field. Pick one under Show on each line, or write the pattern with a field such as {{ $data.item.name }}.
  • My typed items disappeared. A data list is chosen, so the typed items are ignored. Choose Not connected — items are typed in to get them back.
  • Wrapped lines go back under the marker. Set Left indent and Special → Hanging with the same By value.
  • I want one item in bold or another colour. Text styling applies to the whole list. Make that line its own Text block, or convert the list to Text.
