Block
Spacer
An empty gap of a set height — it prints nothing, it just pushes what follows further down.
What it is for
A Spacer is a deliberate piece of blank height. It draws no line, no colour and no text; it takes up the height you give it, so everything after it moves down by that much. Use it for a gap a form needs on purpose, such as room to sign by hand or to press a stamp.
Choose something else when the gap simply belongs to one block. A margin on the block above or below (the Box section of the side panel) travels with that block when you move it, whereas a Spacer is a separate item you have to remember to move too. And a Spacer is not the way to start a new page: use a Page break for that.
Add and edit it
The quickest route is Add space below: select the block you want a gap after, open its menu (⋮ on the block bar, or right-click) and pick it. The gap lands directly below that block and inside whatever holds it — in the same Stack, the same Row column, the same repeating section — not at the bottom of the page. It is one step, so one undo takes it back.
Two places will not take a gap this way, and the menu says why instead of doing nothing: inside a table cell (use that cell's own + Add block) and in a header or footer.
There is no Spacer tile in the block palette. Where there is no block to add the gap below — an empty page, an empty Stack or Row column — search for "blank space": the Search button at the top of the block palette, or Search blocks… at the top of any + Add block menu.
On the page a Spacer shows as a selectable outline so you can find and move it. There is nothing to type into, and double-clicking does nothing. Drag it with its handle to move it, and use its menu (⋮ on the block bar, or right-click) to move it into another container, duplicate it or delete it.
Settings
A Spacer has one setting of its own.
- Height (millimetres, 0 or more; a new Spacer starts at 8 mm). How much blank vertical space it takes. A height of 0 takes none.
Like every block it also has the general sections: Box (a margin there adds to the gap; leave fill and border empty, because they would colour the gap) and Visibility (skip it unless your data says so). In practice you only need Height, and Visibility if the gap should appear only for some documents.
Variations and combinations
Room for a handwritten signature. A 25 mm Spacer between the sign-off and the printed name
leaves space for a pen. The example is
spacer-1.json. With the sample data signer.name = "Mara Ozols" and
signer.role = "Managing Director", the page reads "Yours sincerely," then a clear 25 mm, then
"Mara Ozols" in bold and "Managing Director" in grey.
Room for a stamp. A 30 mm Spacer between a "Received in good order:" line and a short rule,
with a small caption under the rule: the recipient stamps in the gap and signs on the rule. The
example is spacer-2.json. It uses a Line set to 60 mm long, left
aligned.
Gap that belongs to a block. If the 25 mm only exists to separate the sign-off from what follows, give "Yours sincerely," a bottom margin of 25 mm in its Box section instead. The page looks the same, and the gap moves with the text.
Output differences
- PDF and web page (HTML). The gap is exactly the Height you set.
- Word (.docx). A Spacer draws nothing, so Word receives the gap as spacing above the next block. Word shortens any single gap to 20 mm: a 25 mm Spacer comes out as 20 mm in the Word file, a 10 mm one is unchanged. Gaps under half a millimetre are dropped. If a larger gap matters in Word, split it across two Spacers with a block between them, or give a block a margin.
Troubleshooting
- A page break appears where I did not expect one. A Spacer takes up its height like any other block, so one near the bottom of a page can push the block after it onto the next page. Reduce its Height, or select the block after it and open Page position → Why is this here?.
- I cannot find the Spacer to delete it. It prints nothing. Open the Outline tab, or click where the gap is: it shows as an outline when selected.
- The gap is too small in Word. Word shortens gaps over 20 mm; see above.
- "Add space below" is greyed out. You selected something inside a table cell or a header or footer. Pick a block on the page, or use the cell's own + Add block.
- The gap shows in the editor but not when I generate. Check the Spacer's Visibility condition: when it is false, the Spacer is skipped.
