Block
Page break
Ends the current page early, so whatever follows starts at the top of a fresh page.
What it is for
A Page break is a marker you drop into the document to force a new page at that exact point. It has no height and prints nothing: the page simply ends there and the next block begins at the top of the following page. Use it when a part must start on its own page: terms and conditions after an offer, an appendix after a report, a signature page at the end.
Choose something else when you want to keep things together rather than push them apart. To stop a heading being left alone at the bottom of a page, switch on Keep with next on the heading. To keep a group of blocks on one page, put them in a Stack set to Keep together. To start a whole new set of pages with a different size, margins, header or footer, add a section (see Sections). A page break is for a deliberate, permanent division. Do not use Spacers to push content onto the next page: the spacing breaks the moment the content above changes length.
Add and edit it
The quickest route is Insert page break below: select the block the page should end after, open its menu (⋮ on the block bar, or right-click) and pick it. Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac) does the same thing. It is one step, so one undo takes it back.
There is no Page break tile in the block palette. On a page with nothing selected yet, search for "page break" with the Search button at the top of the block palette, then drag it to the point where you want the page to end.
On the page it appears as a dashed strip labelled "Page break", so you can see and click it even though it takes no room in the document. It is an editing aid only: it never appears in the PDF, Word file or print output. Select it and press Delete to remove it, or use its menu to duplicate or move it. There is nothing to open, and double-clicking does nothing.
Where it works
A page break only works directly on the page. Inside a Stack, a Row column, a repeating section, a table cell or a Ruled form it would end nothing, so the editor refuses to put one there, by every route: Insert page break below is greyed out with the reason, the Page break choice in a column's or container's "+" is greyed out too, and dragging a page break into one is refused. Pick the container itself, or a block on the page, instead. Headers and footers do not take one. A block pinned to an exact position (a fixed-position block) is not part of the flow, so a break does not move it: it stays where you pinned it.
In a section with newspaper columns. A page break ends the whole page, not just the column it is in: whatever follows starts the next page in column 1, and the rest of the page, including any columns after it, stays empty. There is no column break. See Row columns and newspaper columns for the difference between a section's newspaper columns and a Row's columns.
Settings
A page break has no settings of its own. Its position is the whole instruction: move it to change where the page ends. The only general section it keeps is Visibility. The side panel shows no Box section for it (there is nothing to space or colour), but it tells you what the break does where it sits:
- that it ends the page;
- that it ends the whole page across newspaper columns;
- that it ends nothing, because it sits inside a container, because it comes before anything else on its page (a page break never makes an empty page), or because the break just before it already ends the page.
Variations and combinations
Start an appendix on its own page. An offer on page 1, then a page break, then "Appendix A -
Terms". The example is page-break-1.json. With the sample data offer = "Q-2087" and price =
"EUR 4,800", page 1 reads "Offer Q-2087" and "We offer the services listed below for a fixed price
of EUR 4,800." and page 2 starts with "Appendix A - Terms" and "These terms apply to every service
we deliver under offer Q-2087." The document is two pages whatever the length of the offer.
Only break when the data asks for it. Select the page break and use Visibility to show it
only when a field says so (here $data.separateTerms). The fixture is page-break-2.json. With
separateTerms = false the break is skipped and the document is one page: "Offer Q-2087", the price
sentence, then the "Terms" heading and its sentence straight after. Set it to true and the terms start
page 2.
Break versus Keep with next. If the offer is long, the appendix still starts on a fresh page and the page before may end half empty. If what you actually want is "never leave the heading alone at the foot of a page", delete the break and set Keep with next on the heading instead (in Line and Page Breaks in the side panel).
Output differences
The page structure comes from the same layout for every format, so the break lands in the same place in the PDF, the web page (HTML) and the Word (.docx) file: the following content starts a new page in each. Only the dashed marker is editor-only. What you cannot control is how Word re-flows text if the person editing the Word file changes fonts or margins, because the page then ends where Word's own layout decides, apart from your break.
Troubleshooting
- A nearly empty page. A page break fires regardless of how much room is left, so one that made sense when the content above was short can leave a mostly blank page once it grows. Delete it, or use Keep with next or a Stack set to Keep together instead.
- A blank page I did not want. A page break never makes an empty page on its own: at the very top of a page, straight after another break, or at the very end of the document it does nothing. A blank page therefore comes from something else, usually a Spacer or an empty block pushed past the page end. Open the page's blocks with Page position → Why is this here?.
- "Insert page break below" is greyed out. The block is inside a Stack, Row column, table cell, repeating section, Ruled form, header or footer. Select the container, or a block on the page.
- The break does not seem to do anything. Select it: the side panel says whether it ends the page or why it ends nothing.
- A fixed-position block does not move to the new page. It stays where you pinned it.
